In fact, there were several things in this book that felt like chance, like the author got stuck at parts and then decided to just make stuff up to resolve the conflict. In this book, the climactic moment felt more like chance. In the first book, Daring Do acted and that was a large part of what saved the day. I do have the same complaint with this book that I did with the Marapore, in that the climax was a little weak. It was fun seeing her in new situations, and these books do a great job at expanding the land of Equestria while also referencing bits from the show.
Daring Do was a little more involved in the plot from the beginning, and I loved getting to know her a little better. I enjoyed this book as much as the first.
